ISTE 2022 Inspiration on Leadership

 Notes and other things that resonated with me: 

  • Start the school year with a Fireside chat with superintendent/principal with students for convocation. Invite graduates back that are 5+ years out (should have large diversity in types of kids we bring back for this and only 3-5) respond to: 
    •  Biggest take away's from our district/school? 
    • What they want us to know. 
    • What we can do better to prepare future students for their future? 
  • Based on this, have teachers commit to making one change this year based on what they heard and POG. Have teachers document and share their process to reflect on at various points throughout the year, we would also build PD model, teacher evaluations, goal setting, etc. based on this. 
    • This models design thinking, empathy interviews, meeting students changing needs, supporting staff and giving staff voice and choice in what they are going to do
  • District has a mini ISTE with workshops before school year starts with food trucks, vendors, etc. to get set-up. Bring in band, etc. Get excitement going for the school year. 
    • Professional learning is about changing adult behaviors through competency based experiences. This is best practice to engage and invigorate staff. 
    • Offer micro credentials around diversity and inclusion that provide choice and voice to staff. Must do 1, can do more.

  1. Use Google my Maps and have teachers plot where they went over the summer (good reminder, had done this in the past...) 
  2. We need to know who we are before we can lead. Our values dictate how we lead. Need to be clear about setting clear values. 
  3. The best leaders lead from their values and demonstrate this daily.

Reflecting on the 2010’s

How do you measure success? How do you reflect on a decade? The week between Christmas and New Years is always a time when you look back on past successes and failures and think forward to setting goals for the future. Lately, I have found myself at an odd crossroad. I have always been a very goal oriented person and thrive when I have goals to work towards whether they are personal wellness, fitness, travel, education and/or work related. Since defending my dissertation on October 1, I have struggled to figure out what exactly my next goal is. Year of the learner

 I recently read a post by George Couros who I write about frequently here, where he deemed this the year of the learner. Specifically, I believe he meant the year of the adult learner. Nearly a year ago, I completed my dissertation and oddly enough since finishing my edits, I have not touched it or even read it through again. I feel like I wrote it a million years ago after all that has happened in education this past year. The goal of my research study was to focus on adult learners and what professional development best meets their needs. Specifically, I focused on high school math and science teachers through a case study approach.
